What is a Public IP Address?
Your public IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to your device or network by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is the address that the outside internet sees when you browse websites, send emails, or connect to online services.
IPv4 vs IPv6
There are two main versions of IP addresses in use today:
- IPv4: The older, most common format (e.g.,
192.168.1.1). It uses 32-bit addresses, allowing for about 4.3 billion unique IPs. - IPv6: The newer format created to solve IPv4 exhaustion (e.g.,
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). It uses 128-bit addresses, providing an essentially limitless supply.
